An assault in her studio ended, in one night, more than a decade of exhibited work — juried acceptance into shows at the Pastel Society of America, the American Artist's Professional League, the Salmagundi Club, the Pastel Society of Canada, and beyond. For years afterward, she couldn't paint. She gave her canvases away.
Then came an invitation: a month-long artist residency in France, painting across several locations — a stone studio cottage on the River Rance at the Musée de La Grande Vigne in Dinan, Le Mas d'Ariveaux in Tarascon, Provence, and Paris, where she returned to watercolor for the first time since college. Something in her opened.
Told through dream journal entries, studio notes, and the paintings born from them, Embrace the Mountain traces the residency where Dorothy's healing color palette first took its shape — and where the landscape painter transformed, learning to symbolically integrate organic and man-made structures within her art.
